Notion AI is no longer something you buy on its own. Full Notion AI comes with the Business plan at $20 per member per month billed yearly, or with Enterprise at a custom price. The Free and Plus plans only get a limited trial, so if you want Notion AI for daily work, Business is the plan you are really pricing.
That change catches a lot of people off guard. Many guides still describe a cheap AI add-on, and that option is gone. This guide covers what each plan includes today, what the trial actually gives you, where credits come in, and how to decide whether the jump to Business pays for itself.
Notion AI Pricing at a Glance

The yearly figures come from Notion's own page, which says annual billing saves up to 20%. Independent breakdowns put the monthly-billing price at $12 for Plus and $24 for Business, which is what you pay if you want to be able to cancel after any month.
The line that matters is the one between Plus and Business. Everything below Business is a trial. Everything from Business up is the real product.
How per-member billing adds up
Notion charges per member, not per workspace. Every person you add to a paid workspace becomes a paid seat, and the seat count is synced to your member count at the start of each billing period. If you add someone mid-cycle, you pay a prorated amount for the rest of that cycle.
For a solo user this barely matters. For a team, it means Notion AI is priced per head, and moving a 10-person team from Plus to Business on yearly billing costs an extra $100 a month, or $1,200 a year, purely for the AI tier and the admin features that come with it.
What Happened to the Notion AI Add-On
For a long time, Notion AI was a paid add-on of about $10 per month on top of your plan. That setup is gone. The standalone add-on was discontinued in 2025, and AI access is now tied to the plan tier instead.
The practical effect is that the cheapest way to get full Notion AI went up. Before, a Plus user could add AI for a small monthly fee. Now that same user has to move the whole workspace to Business. One analysis of the change put it bluntly: the effective price of AI is the gap between Plus and Business, roughly $10 per seat per month, multiplied by every member.
If you still see "Notion AI add-on" on a pricing breakdown or a comparison table, that page is out of date. There is no way to buy the add-on today.
Is Notion AI Free? What the Trial Covers
Notion AI is not free for regular use, but you can try it without paying. According to Notion's help center, users on the Free and Plus plans get a limited number of complimentary AI responses so they can test the features.
The pricing table lists these features as "Limited Trial" on both Free and Plus:
- Notion Agent, which covers chat, writing, autofill, and translation
- AI Meeting Notes
- Research mode, which is still in beta
Once the complimentary responses are used up, the AI features stop working until you upgrade. Notion does not publish a fixed number of trial responses on the pricing page, so treat the trial as a way to see whether the features fit your work, not as a free tier you can live on.
Can you get a Notion AI free trial on Business?
Yes. Notion offers trials of its paid plans, and Custom Agents were free to use on Business trials during their launch period. Notion also refunds the full amount if you downgrade within three days of signing up for monthly billing, or within 30 days on yearly billing. That refund window is the most reliable way to test full Notion AI on your own workspace without committing.
What the Notion AI Business Plan Includes
Business is the tier Notion calls "the AI workspace", and it is where the AI features stop being trials. On top of everything in Plus, a Business seat unlocks:
- Notion Agent without trial limits, for chat, generation, autofill, and translation
- AI Meeting Notes, which records and summarizes calls inside Notion
- Enterprise Search, which is still in beta
- Research mode for longer, open-ended questions
- AI image generation, which admins can switch on or off
Business also brings the non-AI features that justify the price for many teams: SAML single sign-on, private teamspaces, granular database permissions, and 90 days of page history instead of 30 on Plus.
If your team needs those admin features anyway, the AI is effectively included. If you would only move to Business for the AI, you are paying the full gap for one feature set.
Notion AI meeting notes and plan limits
AI Meeting Notes is one of the most searched Notion AI features, and it has the tightest plan rules. Notion's help center says it is available on Business and Enterprise, and on eligible mobile subscriptions where Notion AI is included. On Free and Plus it only runs as part of the trial.
That makes meeting capture an expensive reason to upgrade on its own. A dedicated recorder can cover the same job at a different cost structure. Usage Allowances, Credits, and Custom Agents
Business does not mean unlimited use of every AI feature. Notion explains that Business and Enterprise include a usage allowance for certain Notion AI features, measured over a rolling six-hour window and a monthly window. If your workspace goes past it, some features pause until the allowance refreshes.
This is where Notion credits come in. Credits are a separate, paid unit that Notion introduced for work that costs more to run. They are used in three places:
- Custom Agents. Agents that handle repetitive tasks on their own spend credits on every run. Simple tasks use fewer credits and multi-step workflows use more.
- Premium AI models. Premium models stay off until an owner or admin turns them on, and each request spends credits at the model provider's published rate, with no markup from Notion.
- Going past the allowance. When a Business or Enterprise workspace hits its usage allowance, owners can let the team spend credits to keep working instead of waiting.
According to the credits documentation, credits cost $10 per 1,000, are shared across the workspace, and reset every month, so unused credits do not roll over. Custom Agents were free until May 3, 2026, and started using credits on May 4, 2026. Notion also says Business and Enterprise plan prices did not change when credits arrived, and Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, and Enterprise Search stay included at no extra cost.
What this means for your real bill
For most people, the Business seat price is the whole bill. Credits only become a line item if your team builds Custom Agents, turns on premium models, or regularly runs past the usage allowance. Admins can cap how many credits each member spends, which is worth setting before anyone starts experimenting with agents.
Notion AI for Students: What the Education Plan Covers
Students often assume the free Education Plan includes Notion AI. It does not include the full version. Notion's pricing page describes the student offer as the Plus plan with a one-member limit, free for students and educators, and Plus lists Notion AI as a limited trial.
To qualify, you need an email address from an accredited college or university listed in the World Higher Education Database, and you have to re-verify it once a year. The education help page also notes that K-12 students and teachers are not eligible, and that personal email addresses do not count. For a student, full Notion AI means paying for a Business seat on your own. At $20 a month billed yearly, that is $240 a year for AI features built mainly for team workspaces.
Where students get more value
The AI features most students actually use are narrow: turning a lecture into notes, summarizing a reading, and building review material before an exam. Those are capture and study jobs, not workspace jobs.

When Business pays for itself
Business tends to make sense in three situations. The first is a team that already needs SSO, private teamspaces, or finer permissions, where the AI comes along with an upgrade you would make anyway. The second is a team that runs its projects, docs, and meeting notes inside Notion, so Enterprise Search and the Agent have enough material to be useful. The third is a team that wants AI Meeting Notes stored right next to the project pages they belong to.
When it probably does not
The case is weaker for solo users and students who want one or two AI features. Paying $240 a year for a seat mostly designed for teams is hard to justify when the job is summarizing lectures or recording the occasional call. It is also weaker for teams whose documents live elsewhere, because the AI's value rests on what it can read inside the workspace.
A simple test: list the three AI tasks you would use every week, then check whether each one needs your Notion workspace to work. If most of them do, Business is a fair price. If most of them do not, a dedicated tool for those tasks will usually cost less and do the job with fewer steps.
